The strife that descended on the district, in the wake of the decision to consolidate the two schools, made the light extravaganza an even better idea.Ĭhoir Director Andy DelMonte, left, and Project Make and computer programming teacher Walt Hays who together created an LED light display that illuminates the entrance to West County High School in Sebastopol, Calif., on Tuesday, November 30, 2021. When DelMonte suggested a light and music show to the administration a year ago, he got an immediate green light, no pun intended. DelMonte is the school’s choir director, which explained the Jay-Z-inspired legend on the back of his hoody (“I got 99 problems, but my pitch ain’t one.”) He’s also taught a wide range of classes in his 25 years at West County. Hays, who’s been at the high school for 17 years, teaches Maker classes and computer programming. They just thought it would be cool to bring a new tradition to the school that employed them. ![]() When they first pitched the project, DelMonte and Hays weren’t trying to lower the temperature on debates between Analy and El Molino partisans. It is the brainchild of two veteran teachers. To Megan, the show seemed like a collaboration “between the choir, the band and the computer science club.” A new tradition The soundtrack of students, voices raised in song, “is kind of a counter” to that ongoing clash, Drew noted. ![]() That vote sparked fresh outrage, resulting in some 300 students walking out of class the following morning. Indeed, the night after the Drews basked in the light show, the board voted to cancel plans to rebrand the school, ensuring that West County will soon revert to Analy. He was alluding to the acrimony that has swirled around the West Sonoma County Union High School District since last March, when its board, faced with mounting budget shortfalls, voted to consolidate Analy High School with El Molino High School in Forestville. As “Ubi Caritas” played in the background - this ethereal version was recorded by El Molino’s Encore choir in 2009 - he praised the project for “bringing the community together.” Sitting in the parking lot on a bench they pulled from the back of their pickup, the trio put a serious dent in a large bowl of popcorn while the sound and iridescent light washed over them.ĭevin Drew described himself as a scientist with a soft spot for the performing arts. 30 were Devin Drew, his wife Megan and their middle-school-aged son. “We see this as a way to build community, and bring us all together in a fun way,” said Hays. ![]() Two thousand lights on strings suspended from the school’s roof seemed to pulse and dance with the holiday music coming from two all-weather speakers.Ĭonceived and executed by West County teachers Walt Hays and Andy DelMonte, with help from some students, the show lasts 32 minutes, and will run continuously every evening, between 5:30 and 8:30 p.m., through New Years. That space now serves as a grand canvas for a dazzling light and music show. The Sebastopol school formerly known as - and soon to be renamed - Analy, features a distinctive façade, commissioned as a Great Depression-era WPA project. The girls basketball team was hosting Justin-Siena on a recent evening, but that’s not why a small crowd had gathered in the parking lot in front of West County High School. ![]() To be included, a game must have been reviewed by PCMag, still be available for purchase, and received a rating of 3.5 stars or greater. Here's what we came up with, after much deliberation. ![]() Racist dons abhor his presence radical ones like Bertrand Russell (Jeremy Northam) entreat Hardy to let him run and hang the need for proofs. Where are the proofs, they ask? Ramanujan shrugs: he sees the theories whole, in his mind, not the proofs. Neither the cold and aloof Hardy nor his warm and witty fellow mathematician JE Littlewood (Toby Jones) can quite understand the work, nor how a self-taught Brahmin from Tamil Nadu could come up with it. He gets a polite biopic, courtesy of sophomore director Matthew Brown, which even manages to obscure a low budget with the feat of actually shooting in Trinity College, Cambridge. The Man Who Knew Infinity is a 2015 British biographicaldrama film about the Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, based on the 1991 book of the same name by Robert Kanigel. Most of the film takes place in Cambridge, after Ramanujan has been invited to England to explain the theories he put forward in a letter to the eminent Cambridge mathematician, GH Hardy (Jeremy Irons), in 1913. ![]() Assuming you don't care about accuracy in his life story. ![]() ![]() Let's start again: if you don't mind a broad melodrama about a fascinating and mysteriously gifted man who revolutionised mathematical thinking, then this is your film. In fact, a bit less overexplicitness might have amplified the fundamental mystery that underlies genius of any sort, not to mention the relationship between Hardy and a junior colleague who before long is displaying the sort of unsurpassable gifts that so literal-minded a venture barely begins to comprehend. The casting of Dev Patel as Ramanujan was all but inevitable in that sense: get the guy from Slumdog Millionaire and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel! The two leads' easy and engaging rapport is the film's greatest strength.Įlsewhere, those wanting to match wits may feel shortchanged by a screenplay that barely nods in the direction of the Beautiful Mind territory of mathematical formulae onscreen, though I liked the comparison of maths to colours that you cannot see. Irons ( pictured above left), several decades too old for the part though he is, knows this sort of role well and brings familiar flashes of empathy to lessen the English chill, and Patel's innately open-faced charm helps deflect lines like "I was told you love numbers more than people", to quote a charge leveled in his direction by his bride-to-be. His head faster than any abacus, Ramanujan grows in his colleagues' estimation even as he declines in health, his rapport with Hardy deepening all the while to the point that the two men are soon debating who owes more to whom. Toby Jones ( pictured above right with Patel and Irons) proffers kindness as well as a fellow brainiac with whom Hardy can collaborate on the the topic of twin primes, while a name-heavy supporting cast ropes in Stephen Fry, the late Richard Johnson in his last screen appearance, and the nowadays insufficiently seen Jeremy Northam, who on this evidence has apparently spent a lot of time of late growing a moustache. That cultural divide in turn allows for a veritable roll call of fine British thesps on hand to sneer on cue, Anthony Calf perhaps the most egregiously disdainful of them all, though Malcolm Sinclair has a snappish scene at the start. The Man Who Knew Infinitys disinterest in the British Empires occupation of Indiaand its downplaying of the harshness of life for those under its imperial handisnt likely to play well. You can pretty well intuit that Ramanujan will leave behind an (arranged) Indian bride (Devika Bhise), trading in domesticity for the patronising climes he encounters at Cambridge. Mental agility is in vogue these days following the success of films like The Theory of Everything, which is in itself no bad thing and makes one wish that Brown wasn't so dully explicit in laying out of the scenario alongside his chosen themes. That Ramanujan died ridiculously young (in 1920 at age 32) only amplifies the inherent drama that sets the Indian prodigy's numerical skill against the awakening to emotional awareness of the – you guessed it – repressed Hardy, who as written here could as well be a stand-in for the CS Lewis presented on stage and screen in Shadowlands: another mighty British intellect who required an outsider (in that instance, his American wife Joy) to understand what Hardy is quick to describe as "matters of the heart". Now along comes American writer-director Matthew Brown with a tentative take on the intriguingly knotted story of the Madras-born Ramanujan (played this time out by Dev Patel) and the eventual acclaim and renown that he achieved against the odds under the tutelage of GH Hardy ( Jeremy Irons) at Trinity College, Cambridge. |
