To Megan, the show seemed like a collaboration “between the choir, the band and the computer science club.” A new tradition The soundtrack of students, voices raised in song, “is kind of a counter” to that ongoing clash, Drew noted. ![]() That vote sparked fresh outrage, resulting in some 300 students walking out of class the following morning. ![]() Racist dons abhor his presence radical ones like Bertrand Russell (Jeremy Northam) entreat Hardy to let him run and hang the need for proofs. Where are the proofs, they ask? Ramanujan shrugs: he sees the theories whole, in his mind, not the proofs. Neither the cold and aloof Hardy nor his warm and witty fellow mathematician JE Littlewood (Toby Jones) can quite understand the work, nor how a self-taught Brahmin from Tamil Nadu could come up with it. He gets a polite biopic, courtesy of sophomore director Matthew Brown, which even manages to obscure a low budget with the feat of actually shooting in Trinity College, Cambridge. The Man Who Knew Infinity is a 2015 British biographicaldrama film about the Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, based on the 1991 book of the same name by Robert Kanigel. Most of the film takes place in Cambridge, after Ramanujan has been invited to England to explain the theories he put forward in a letter to the eminent Cambridge mathematician, GH Hardy (Jeremy Irons), in 1913. ![]() Assuming you don't care about accuracy in his life story. ![]() ![]() Let's start again: if you don't mind a broad melodrama about a fascinating and mysteriously gifted man who revolutionised mathematical thinking, then this is your film. In fact, a bit less overexplicitness might have amplified the fundamental mystery that underlies genius of any sort, not to mention the relationship between Hardy and a junior colleague who before long is displaying the sort of unsurpassable gifts that so literal-minded a venture barely begins to comprehend. The casting of Dev Patel as Ramanujan was all but inevitable in that sense: get the guy from Slumdog Millionaire and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel! The two leads' easy and engaging rapport is the film's greatest strength.Įlsewhere, those wanting to match wits may feel shortchanged by a screenplay that barely nods in the direction of the Beautiful Mind territory of mathematical formulae onscreen, though I liked the comparison of maths to colours that you cannot see. Irons ( pictured above left), several decades too old for the part though he is, knows this sort of role well and brings familiar flashes of empathy to lessen the English chill, and Patel's innately open-faced charm helps deflect lines like "I was told you love numbers more than people", to quote a charge leveled in his direction by his bride-to-be. His head faster than any abacus, Ramanujan grows in his colleagues' estimation even as he declines in health, his rapport with Hardy deepening all the while to the point that the two men are soon debating who owes more to whom. Toby Jones ( pictured above right with Patel and Irons) proffers kindness as well as a fellow brainiac with whom Hardy can collaborate on the the topic of twin primes, while a name-heavy supporting cast ropes in Stephen Fry, the late Richard Johnson in his last screen appearance, and the nowadays insufficiently seen Jeremy Northam, who on this evidence has apparently spent a lot of time of late growing a moustache. That cultural divide in turn allows for a veritable roll call of fine British thesps on hand to sneer on cue, Anthony Calf perhaps the most egregiously disdainful of them all, though Malcolm Sinclair has a snappish scene at the start. The Man Who Knew Infinitys disinterest in the British Empires occupation of Indiaand its downplaying of the harshness of life for those under its imperial handisnt likely to play well. You can pretty well intuit that Ramanujan will leave behind an (arranged) Indian bride (Devika Bhise), trading in domesticity for the patronising climes he encounters at Cambridge. Mental agility is in vogue these days following the success of films like The Theory of Everything, which is in itself no bad thing and makes one wish that Brown wasn't so dully explicit in laying out of the scenario alongside his chosen themes. That Ramanujan died ridiculously young (in 1920 at age 32) only amplifies the inherent drama that sets the Indian prodigy's numerical skill against the awakening to emotional awareness of the – you guessed it – repressed Hardy, who as written here could as well be a stand-in for the CS Lewis presented on stage and screen in Shadowlands: another mighty British intellect who required an outsider (in that instance, his American wife Joy) to understand what Hardy is quick to describe as "matters of the heart". Now along comes American writer-director Matthew Brown with a tentative take on the intriguingly knotted story of the Madras-born Ramanujan (played this time out by Dev Patel) and the eventual acclaim and renown that he achieved against the odds under the tutelage of GH Hardy ( Jeremy Irons) at Trinity College, Cambridge. ![]() Photography Sacha Waldman How true is the movie Get Rich or Die Tryin Label Interscope Records, Aftermath Entertainment & Shady Records. ![]() This trajectory, from the promise of happily ever after to a more progressive portrayal of sexuality, can be mapped from Smashed and a certain unholy union between vampire and slayer. The episode of Reign that was so controversial that two of its sex scenes were cut from broadcast and were instead included in the online version, much to the chagrin of The Parents Television Council. The Vampire Diaries’ famous take on hate sex. The Riverdale gang’s penchant for hot showers and blindfolds. See also: Gossip Girl living up to it’s unique selling proposition-as promised in the iconic promotional posters from 2008 which featured quotes from scandalized reviewers-via dorm room threesomes and uninhibited hookups in limos, elevators, and on top of bars in expensive hotels. Today, the steaminess of on-screen sex in the modern teen drama is pretty high across the board and only seems to be ramping up in carnal explicitness with series’ like HBO’s brutal but brilliant Euphoria. As a Buffy-less teenager, this was what I had to work with. Perhaps the only post-coitus clue would be a glimpse of disheveled bed sheets, like the aftermath of Rory and Dean’s ill-fated hookup in Gilmore Girls, because it was essential that the location be a bed. Perhaps there would be a few beats of horizontal kissing while a cutesy pop ballad warbled away. Concerning the action in the scene itself, perhaps a spaghetti strap would be tenderly removed from a shoulder to reveal a slip of bare skin à la Joey and Pacey’s first time on Dawson’s Creek. But the TV shows I was obsessed with during my formative years in the late ‘90s and early aughts presented it with a short and sweet formula: In order for a couple to do the deed, we-the devoted audience-had to believe their relationship was based on love (or something like it) following a multi-episode romantic arc. In particular, the notion of a female character losing her virginity, and to whom, has historically provided great narrative mileage, from Donna Martin in Beverly Hills 90210 to Blair Waldorf in the original Gossip Girl. Teen and young-adult television has had a preoccupation with sex for as long as the genre has existed. In it, we got to see what sex with the bad boy actually looked like after being merely titillated with the archetype by our favorite teen dramas for so long. ” This infamous episode aired 20 years ago today, during Buffy’s sixth and most divisive season. ![]() No episode captured the potency of this trifecta more than “ Smashed. It was about the kind of anxious, teenaged naivety that made me a little bit scared of Buffy because of its proximity to violence, death, and sex. I was in high school for the majority of its original run-from 1997 to 2003-and would tell myself the show wasn’t for me because the girl my 9th grade boyfriend had not-so-secretly hooked up with adored it (she even wore a replica of Buffy’s crucifix necklace to class.) Looking back, I realize that it wasn’t about my heartbroken vitriol at all. So as a way to help ease our suffering, I thought it would be fun to predict what kind of mischief our Mystic Falls residents will be up to during their summer break.I’ll admit it: I didn’t watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer until I was in my twenties. Granted, that still means we're looking at facing roughly 4 months of a TVD-less world. as per usual, while The Originals will take over Reign's former time slot immediately afterward at 9 p.m.) As of now, no specific dates for the premieres have been released, but at least fans can take solace in knowing that both supernatural dramas will be back in the fall as per usual rather than being bumped to the midseason lineup, a la The 100. Let me explain… The CW has just released its fall TV schedule, which now has The Vampire Diaries and The Originals airing back-to-back on Thursday nights. But when we do, we'll get double the amount of vampire drama all in one night as an added bonus. Unfortunately, though we're going to have some time to kill before getting another proper TVD fix. However, being the hardcore TVD fanatic that I am, I'm also extremely excited to see how this massive shakeup will impact the show moving forward, which means The Vampire Diaries Season 7 premiere date cannot come soon enough. (I'm choosing to remain in denial for as long as possible FYI.) Throughout the years, we've come to think of these characters as family, so to see one of our core members leave for good feels like a wooden stake right through the heart. ![]() It's always hard saying goodbye to your favorite TV shows for the summer, but I think we can all agree that The Vampire Diaries Season 6 finale will prove to be even more bittersweet than usual given that it also signifies Elena's official departure from the show. |
